19 November 2011 THE number of people in Chipata who died after being struck by lightning has gone up to seven, from three. The victims met their fate on Wednesday during a friendly football match at Nakubaba Village in Chief Chanje’s area. Eastern Province commissioner of police Grace Chipalila and Chief Chanje of the Chewa people confirmed in Chipata in separate interviews yesterday that four more people had died. Ms Chipalila said initially, three people died on the spot while watching a Judy Cup football league game between a Zambian team and one from neighbouring Malawi. She said the incident happened around 16:00 hours as the spectators stood under a tree during a heavy downpour. Police officers visited the area to investigate the matter and found that some of the spectators were from Malawi and had travelled to Zambia for the football match. And Chief Chanje said he received a report that three Malawians who were struck by lightning but travelled back to Malawi died upon arrival. He said one Malawian died at Nakubaba Village. Provincial medical officer Kennedy Malama identified some of the deceased as Nickson Nyirenda, 22, Ezra Phiri, 24, and Davison Phiri whose age was not known. Be the first to Write a Comment !
