16 August 2011 NDOLA rider Fletcher Broad on Sunday scooped the motocross seventh round national championship main MX1 class held at Mindolo Dam Motopark in Kitwe after amassing maximum 45 points. According to results released by Motorcycle Commission head of Women in Motorcycling, Priscilla Lionnet, George Samaras of Kitwe finished second with 36 points on the day when MX1 leader Nicholas Comana of Lusaka failed to make the championship due to an injury. Honda mounted Dale Holliday of Ndola won the MX2 class after accruing 40 points and was followed by townmate Brandon Reed on 36 points while Lusaka’s Justin Barrett finished third with 28 points. Mkushi’s Dima Fircks returned from a three-month training stint in England on a winning note, powering his Yamaha to first position in the 125cc class with 45 points ahead of fellow teenagers Bradley Lionnet of Kitwe and Giorgio de Florio from Ndola on 36 and 30 points respectively. Bradley went on to win the 85cc class with 45 points, relegating Leah Heygate of Chingola and her brother Scott to second and third position respectively after the siblings amassed 36 and 30 points. Priscilla said that despite a few regulars staying away because of injuries and being on vacation, an impressive field of 20 riders made the championship. She said the championship helped national team riders fine-tune for next weekend’s International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) Africa Motocross championships set for Donnybrook Raceway in Harare, Zimbabwe. Priscilla said two-time motocross world champion, Frenchman Sebastien Tortelli is scheduled to arrive in Zambia today to polish Copperbelt based riders tomorrow at Mindolo then leaves for Lusaka on Friday to complete his training programme with Midlands riders.
