Sylvia Mweetwa 21 November 2011 Serenje — LATE former minister Justin Mukando has been described as a gallant and selfless leader who worked towards the development of the country through various initiatives. Information, Broadcasting and Tourism Minister Given Lubinda said during Mr Mukando’s burial in Serenje yesterday that the former minister was a selfless man who released 30 hectares of land to the Government for the construction of Mukando Girls High School and Basic School as a sign of his commitment to contribute to the development of Zambia. Mr Lubinda said Government under the leadership and guidance of President Michael Sata acknowledged and appreciated Mr Mukando’s contribution to Zambia. Mr Lubinda said President Sata decided to accord Mr Mukando a three-day national morning in honour of his contribution to the country. He said Zambians owed the Mr Mukando a lot but challenged Zambians to emulate him and live for others. He said Mr Mukando also felt duty bound to fight for the independence and later contested for a parliamentary seat in Chitambo Constituency which he won and was in 1978 appointed Minister of State for agriculture and later served as minister of state for cooperatives, the position he held until the UNIP government was removed from power in 1991. He further challenged those in public institutions to consider working for the people as they serve in positions as a means of contributing to the development of the country. And speaking at the same burial, Central Province Minister Philip Kosamu called on Zambians to emulate the works of Mr Mukando if the country was to develop. A family representative Osward Mwelwa described the deceased as a hard worker who worked to the betterment of not only the family but the community as a whole. Mr Mwelwa further paid tribute to President Sata for the support and honouring of Mr Mukando who died in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) last week after an illness. And speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Chief Chitambo paid tribute to Mr Mukando for his dedication to duty and love for the people saying Mr Mukando’s contribution to the nation would be missed. The burial was attended by Works and supply deputy minister Mwenya Musenge, Central Province Permanent Secretary Edwin Zumbunu, five traditional chiefs from Serenje, senior Government officials and several residents.
