Brian Hatyoka 31 August 2011 About 45 percent works have been done on the rehabilitation of the Livingstone International Airport which will be handling approximately 900, 000 passengers annually once complete. The US$ 12 million rehabilitation project which is expected to be completed by April next year is well on course to improve capacity to international standards. National Airports Corporation Limited (NACL) Livingstone Airport manager Joseph Mumbi said in an interview the infrastructure was strategic for tourism inflow and other economic activities, hence its upgrade. Currently, the airport has the capacity to handle 250, 000 passengers per year while a new terminal would be handling an additional 649, 000 passengers annually thereby bringing the total to 899, 000. Mr Mumbi said the old building would be used for domestic passengers while a new terminal building would be handling international flights. He said the construction of a new international terminal building at Livingstone International Airport was progressing well after a groundbreaking ceremony on August 14, last year. A check conducted at the site revealed that a structure for a new terminal building had already been set up. Mr Mumbi said Yangts Jiang contractors, was currently doing the prefabrication of steel frame and purlins at the structure after which the roofing sheets would be put. He said according to the proposed timeframe, the project would be completed by April 19, 2012 if all logistics would be in place. “The contractors have said they are behind by two months due the delay in receiving steel products from South Africa but they assured us that they will try to catch up and finish within the time plan,” he said. With massive investment witnessed in Livingstone especially in the hospitality industry, the number of tourists flying into Livingstone has been on the upswing. Be the first to Write a Comment !
