Government has launched a milk feeding program set to provide nutrition to over 15,000 school children in Nyimba District in the Eastern Province of Zambia. The pilot project dubbed “Milk for Schools” also aims at providing a market for small holder dairy farmers, diversify the agriculture sector and create demand for locally produced milk. Launching the project yesterday Livestock and Fisheries Development Minister, Bradford Machila said giving milk to school children will lead to the development of the culture of drinking milk, and encourage dairy farmers because of availability of a market. And First Secretary for Agriculture and Food Security at the Swedish Embassy Dr. Eva Ohlsson says the Milk for schools project shows change in traditional aid shared to development partnerships that involve a broad range of public, private and civil actors. Milk is a complete food product which contains all vital nutrients required for human growth as it contains 14 of the 18 minerals and vitamins needed for healthy living. This is contained in a statement availed to MUVI TV News in Lusaka today.
