24 October 2011 THE United Party for National Development (UPND) on the Copperbelt has expressed concern at the continuous attacks on party president Hakainde Hichilema. Copperbelt Province UPND chairperson, Elisha Matambo said Mr Hichilema was not a tribalist as was being portrayed in some circles. Mr Matambo gave an example of himself, saying he was from another tribe but was currently serving in the party’s top position in the province. The UPND’s national committee consists of 40 members drawn from different tribes in the country. “Look at me here, I’m not Tonga but am the chairperson for the Copperbelt. Our National Management committee is balanced with members from various ethnic groupings.” he said. He pledged the party’s continued support for Mr Hichilema in the 2016 general elections. “The UPND will offer its total support to Mr Hichilema and will remain a formidable opposition capable of offering checks and balances to the government. He said the UPND leader’s criticism of the Government on the creation of Muchinga Province should not be misunderstood because he was expressing his views. He said continued attacks on Mr Hichilema were not good especially in a democratic country and considering that he was a leader of the opposition. “Mr Hichilema is more vicious on corruption and supports the PF government on its stance to fight the vice. UPND will support progressive ideas but will continue to offer checks and balances to the government.” he said. On the recent resignations in the UPND, Mr Matambo said some of the members resigned on their own after they contested as independent candidates and lost. He said all members that contested as independents ceased to be members of the party at that time. Be the first to Write a Comment !
