25 August 2011 AIRTEL Zambia has started rolling out its network to the most remote parts of Western Province in its efforts to maintain its grip on market-share. Airtel Zambia Managing Director Fayaz King said in Lusaka yesterday that contractors were mobilizing to have the entire Western Province to have on Airtel network, a move aimed at capturing more of the rural populace. “We are now going in areas like Mutomena, Lukena, Liuwa, Libonda Palace and Mishulundu in Western Zambia. Some of these areas can only be accessed by water. This is our commitment to addressing Zambia’s telecommunications needs” he said. He said the move to expand to the most remote was part of the initiative Airtel has been undertaking over the past 10 months. Airtel has so far connected 88 isolated rural areas and communities in Zambia. Mr King said some of the areas that have now been covered have only seen telecommunications technology offloaded only in urban and peri-urban areas. “What we are also witnessing now is evidence that the regulatory environment in the Information Communications and Technologies (ICT) sector of Zambia has significantly advanced,” he said. Other rural areas covered in the last 10 month are in Luapula, Northern, North-Western, Eastern, Southern, Central and some rural parts of the Copperbelt like Lufwanyama, Masaiti, and Mpongwe districts. It is interesting that Airtel is expanding so rapidly. However, caution must be made that the services to the rest of the clients are not affected. In short, the quality must be maintained or even enhanced in order to woo more customers.
