Lusaka — The Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) has reintroduced its direct flights into the Zambian capital, Lusaka, following increased traffic between Amsterdam and the southern African country. KLM managing director Erik Varwijk said the re-launch of the flights to Zambia would open up new markets for business. He was speaking after KLM's re-introduced flight touched down at Lusaka's Kenneth Kaunda (KK) International Airport last Tuesday. Flowers and tourism Varwijk said KLM's first flight to Zambia was a significant milestone, beginning a three-per-week service, which would help open up the central African country to the world. He explained that KLM, which is a shareholder in Kenya Airways, had decided to add Zambia to its direct flights destinations after noticing increased traffic between Zambia and Amsterdam via Kenya on Kenya Airways. "Zambia is experiencing strong growth, thanks to its vigorous mining industry. Moreover, this new destination for KLM will create a direct link between Zambia's flourishing flower industry and the Netherlands, which is the largest junction in the worldwide flower industry", KLM says in a press release. Adding: "Zambia also offers a wide variety of tourist attractions. Tourism in Zambia is centred around the city of Livingstone, located on the banks of the Zambezi river and close to the famed Victoria Falls". Airbus A330-200 Mr. Varwijk, accompanied by Zambian Communication minister Yamfwa Mukanga and Tourism minister Given Lubinda, arrived on an Airbus A330-200 which landed at Lusaka at 10pm, five minutes ahead of schedule. Showers of water were immediately opened onto the 343-seater jet from the airport's shower tower as a sign of welcome. The airline will operate direct flights from Lusaka to Amsterdam on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, leaving Lusaka at 23:55 and arriving in the Netherlands at 09:55 the next day. The return flight will leave Amsterdam at 12:30 and arrive in Lusaka at 22:05 the same day. KLM suspended its flights to Lusaka 16 years ago. The Dutch government announced last year that it will close down its embassy in Zambia. Relationship Minister Mukanga said the bilateral air service agreement just signed between Zambia and the Dutch government marks a new beginning in relations between the two nations. Mr. Mukanga said the agreement will allow both countries' airlines to enter the respective markets without restrictions, give people a choice of travel and help bring about competitive airline fares. "The Netherlands is a strong country within the European Union and has significantly contributed to other areas of our economy," he said. "The Zambian government welcomes KLM and looks forward to continued cooperation between the two countries in the field of air service and other economic endeavours."
HWANGE defender Aaron Katebe has earned his first cap for the senior Zambian national team after being drafted into the squad that held Angola to a goalless draw in Luanda on Wednesday night. Chipolopololo coach Renard Herve, still basking in the glory of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, called Katebe up as one of the three foreign-based players. Katebe, a Zambian Under-20 international, joined midfielder Chisamba Lungu of Russian club FC Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast and Felix Katongo who plays for Petro Atletico in Angola. Herve rested some of his first team players as Zambia had not played a match since winning the Afcon final in February. The French coach was using the match to weigh his options before Zambia set up camp in Johannesburg on May 20 ahead of their 2014 Fifa World Cup Group D qualifying games against Sudan away on June 2 and Ghana at home on June 9. Katebe went to Zambia soon after Hwange's 2-1 win over Black Mambas at the Colliery and is yet to return for club duty. Hwange secretary Burzil Dube yesterday said Katebe was still in Zambia. "He went to Zambia for national team duties but we hope he will be back for the match against Highlanders,' said Dube. Katebe is the third player from Hwange to earn a call to a national team after the pair of skipper Rodwell Chinyengetere and Francisco Zikumbawire were calledup by Warriors coach Rahman Gumbo for camp next week. Meanwhile, former CAPS United coach Fordson Kabole has left his Zambian side Power Dynamos to join DRC second division side Don Bosco FC of Lubumbashi. Kabole told the Zambian media that he has a tough challenge of qualifying his new team to the DR Congo top-flight league by the end of the season. Don Bosco is run by TP Mazembe club president Moise Katumbi's son, Champion, and currently lies second of their regional second division table. Kabole is likely to work with disgraced Zimbabwean players Darryl Nyandoro and Chris Samakweri who stand reportedly duped Kabole's former club CAPS United. Health Deputy Minister Patrick Chikusu says the ministry also plans to open up a training institution similar to Chainama College that offer training in health sciences. Dr. Chikusu says this will help the government address the shortage of manpower currently being faced in the health sector. Dr. Chikusu who has been touring health facilities in the country says from the tours he has undertaken so far, he has learnt that there is urgent need to address the staff shortage in the health sector. He adds that the PF government has in the 2012 budget set aside some money meant for in-service training. Dr. Chikusu was speaking to QFM news in an exclusive interview. And Dr. Chikusu has also said that health personnel working in the Diaspora have expressed interest in taking up jobs in Zambia currently being advertised by the ministry of health. He says the ministry has so far received applications from Zambian medical officers working within the southern region and those in the western countries hit by the effects of the global recession. Dr. Chikusu has attributed the interest by the Zambians health workers to return home to the improved conditions of service being offered by government. He says workers in the health sector are able to access mortgage loans among other improved conditions of service.
